Deck cleaning tips: how to keep your patio looking good through Quebec seasons

Small cleaning habits protect the deck surface, reduce stains, and help the space feel ready to use.

Clean gently and regularly

Most deck surfaces benefit from simple seasonal cleaning. Sweep leaves, pollen, soil, and food debris before they hold moisture or stain the boards.

For composite and PVC, warm water, mild soap, and a soft brush are usually enough. Avoid harsh chemicals unless the board manufacturer recommends them.

  • Sweep often in spring and fall.
  • Clean spills quickly, especially grease, wine, sunscreen, and barbecue residue.
  • Use the manufacturer care guide for Fiberon, Trex, TimberTech, TruNorth, PVC, or wood products.

Be careful with pressure washing

Pressure washers can damage wood fibres, mark composite surfaces, and force water into places it should not go. If used, pressure should be low and the nozzle should stay moving.

A soft brush is safer for most routine cleaning. For wood decks, aggressive washing can raise the grain and make sanding or refinishing necessary sooner.

Maintenance depends on material

Composite and PVC decks are low maintenance, but not no maintenance. They still need washing and occasional checks around gaps, fasteners, and railings.

Treated wood and thermo-treated wood need more attention. Depending on exposure, they may need cleaning, sanding, staining, or sealing to keep the look consistent.

  • Move planters occasionally so moisture does not sit in one spot.
  • Use mats that breathe; avoid rubber-backed mats that trap heat and moisture.
  • Check stair and railing hardware after winter.
